Made in Virginia Store History
Back in 1986, the Mitchell family of Fredericksburg decided that Virginia had too many great products that were going relatively unnoticed. They decided to open a one-stop shopping site for those who want to bring a piece of Virginia heritage and cuisine into their own home. With a love and desire to promote traditional southern hospitality, John and Kathryne opened the Made In Virginia Store at 807 Caroline Street, one block from the Fredericksburg Visitor Center.
John's 13 year career as a wine merchant gave him valuable insight. He began to scour the Commonwealth of Virginia searching out the finest homegrown products. With unparallelled products at hand, the 18th and 19th century buildings lining Historic Fredericksburg made for a natural destination.
Steeped in Colonial and Civil War history and located on the banks of the historic Rappahannock River, this colonial port town was once home to George Washington, James Monroe and John Paul Jones. Despite the mayhem of changing hands seven times during the Civil War, the 40-block National Historic District is now a wonderful shopping, dining and historic destination.
